The San Antonio Spurs and Portland Trail Blazers go head on at the Moda Center on Thursday night in a battle between Western Conference playoff contenders.

Basketball Five-Game Win Streak Snapped

The San Antonio Spurs look to bounce back from their Monday night defeat in Sacramento. The loss snapped San Antonio’s five-game winning streak and dropped them to 32-23 on the season which is tied for 1st in the Southwest Division and also tied for 5th place in the Western Conference team standings.

DeMar DeRozan has fit nicely with the Spurs’ system as he is averaging 21.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game. LaMarcus Aldridge is adding 21.2 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. Veteran forward Rudy Gay is chipping in 14.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

The Spurs rank 13th in team scoring at 112.6 points per game while also giving up the 14th best scoring defense in the league at 110.4 points per game. San Antonio is the 12th best passing team with 24.9 assists per game. They are also the 20th ranked rebounding team at 44.5 boards per contest.

Basketball Three-Game Winning Run Ended

Like the Spurs, the Portland Trail Blazers also saw their winning run ended in their most recent outing against the Miami Heat on Tuesday night. Portland had won three in a row heading to that matchup but the Blazers could not contain Hassan Whiteside who had 28 points and 11 rebounds in the game. Despite the loss, the Blazers are still in 4th place in the Western Conference.

Damian Lillard has been the key to success. Dame is averaging 26.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game. His backcourt partner C.J. McCollum is also scoring 21.2 points per game while big man Jusuf Nurkic is having a double-double season with 15.0 points and 10.3 rebounds while also blocking 1.5 shots per game.

Portland is ranked 10th in the NBA in scoring at 113.0 points per game. They are also 24th in assists at 22.8 dimes per contest and 3rd in rebounds at 47.9 boards per outing. The Blazers are giving up an average of 110.2 points per game this season, giving them the 13th ranked scoring defense in the league.

Basketball Who Wins?

San Antonio is 7-3 SU in its last 10 games played. The Spurs are 3-2 in their last five road games. Portland is 6-4 SU in its last 10 games played and the Blazers are 4-1 SU in their last five games played at their home court. Head to head, the Spurs are 6-4 SU in their last 10 games against the Blazers.

Both these teams are 3-2 in their respective last five games played. The Blazers were expected to win their fourth straight game the last time out but were ambushed by the Miami Heat at the Moda Center. The Spurs meanwhile won five in a row before dropping their last two assignments- both road games, to the Sacramento Kings and the Golden State Warriors. They will be on the road again on Thursday against the Blazers, less than 24 hours after they were blown out by 39 points in Golden State.

Betting Prediction

The Spurs are a different team when they are on the road. San Antonio is an impressive 22-7 SU at home but is just 10-16 SU away from home. Meanwhile, the Blazers are coming off a home loss to the Heat but are still a good 22-8 SU at the Moda Center this season. San Antonio is playing the second of a back to back schedule and were blown out by the Warriors the night before. San Antonio is a veteran team but I’m not sure if they recover within 24 hours.

I’m picking the Portland Trail Blazers to beat the San Antonio Spurs on 2/7/19.
