There is a big difference between where you actually live and where you are playing from with some of these sites. Some gambling sites care about both while some only care about one or the other. With sites that care about both, in order to be able to play with them, you need to live within the confines of their accepted area and you also need to be residing in that area when you’re playing. When a gambling site wants to validate where you are playing from, they turn to technology. A question that we get asked a lot is whether or not there are ways around these restrictions. Basically, can you play on sites that are not servicing your area without moving? So, before we start to answer that question, we’d like to get a few things out there. First, we highly recommend that you don’t try and do this. Why? Well, if the sites catch you playing from somewhere that you’re not supposed to be playing from, they have the right to close your account and take your money. We’re going to guess this is not something that you want to happen.

Second, there are great options available in every area of the world. The most basic way around a lot of these restrictions is to use what is known as a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Without totally nerding out on you, here’s what they do. A VPN allows you to effectively move your computer somewhere else in the world virtually. When other sites see your connection, they will see it coming from a different IP address than where you are actually located.

In the early days of online gambling, a VPN is all you need to trick a site into thinking you were coming from a different country. They still do work at a lot of sites, but we think that’s because the site is playing dumb and can claim ignorance. They’re still doing their due diligence to keep out unwanted players, but they’re not going to go above and beyond even though they probably are well aware of what is going on.

Sites that have wised up and do care about where their player base is from are not easily fooled by VPNs anymore. They’re usually able to detect them and if there is ever a problem with your VPN, there is a chance that your connection will quickly show back up to your actual location. The next way that we’re aware people work their way around these restrictions is by utilizing a second computer within the unrestricted area and using remote access software like TeamViewer to access that computer. Want that in English? Of course. Let’s say you live in the US and you want to play on a site that only services players from Canada. If you’re hardcore about getting on that site, you can find someone in Canada to let you store a computer at their house. You would then use software to remotely access that computer and control that computer from the US. The site would see that computer logging in and would assume everything is fine and wouldn’t know that you’re controlling it from another country.

Now, logistically, this takes a lot of work. You need a second computer as well as someone you trust to house that computer in another country. Additionally, a lot of sites are now not letting people play if they have any sort of remote access software running on their computer. This can be annoying if you’re in web marketing or another profession where you need to use this type of software for non-sketchy purposes.

A lot of you right now are probably asking right now why anyone would ever go through this much trouble? Well, we don’t see it as much from people wanting to play casino games because there are plenty of options in every country. But, we do see it from poker players and sometimes sports bettors who are looking for very specific action and levels of action. Again, we do not recommend this and we have no idea how we know so much about this.

For those that are super hardcore, there are some higher level ways to get around these restrictions that are fairly undetectable by the gaming sites. This involves things like have bridged routers in different countries and things of that sort. We’re not going to go full nerd on you here, but just be aware that there are higher level ways of getting around the system that do exist.

We’ve said this once (or twice) already, but we’re going to say it again. We highly advise you not to try and circumvent the system and gain access to an online gambling site that is not available in your area. You run the risk of getting your account frozen, and the worst case scenario is that they confiscate your funds. If you don’t think this is a reality and you’ll get a slap on the wrist, think again. There are far too many stories out there of online gambling sites shutting down players accounts because they were trying to play from a restricted region.

There is really no reason that you should ever need to try and set up one of these systems to get around that. If you are dead-set on playing on a site that does not service your region, your only safe option is to move or take “gambling trips” to a region that they do service. Others who didn’t want to permanently move would stay living in the states but would travel down to regions accepting action like Mexico or Canada to play for several days or weeks at a time and then return home.
