“Soccer" Parma

Parma Calcio 1913 or Parma was founded in December 1913. They enjoyed their best success during the decade 1992-2002 where they won a total of 8 trophies. During that period, they won three Copa Italia titles, one Supercoppa Italiana, two UEFA Cups, one European Super Cup, and one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. In 2003, the Parmalat scandal caused their parent company to plunge into financial trouble and the club went to administration in 2007. The club reached rock bottom when it became bankrupt in 2015 and was re-founded in Serie D. They have secured three consecutive promotions to return to Serie A in 2018. Parma finished 14th in the 2018-19 Serie A season and enter this matchup against the reigning champions as heavy soccer betting underdogs.

“Soccer" Who Wins?

Juventus has lost just once to Parma in their last 10 head to head meeting. Juve has six wins and three draws during that period. However, Parma forced a 3-3 draw in their last meeting held on February 2, 2019. When it comes to current form, Parma os 3-1-1 in their last five matches while Juventus is only 1-2-2 in their last five matches as of August 15th.

Despite eight consecutive wins in the Italian top flight with Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri preaching defense, Juventus has chosen to change course. They have hired Maurizio Sarri as head coach with the hopes of winning trophies using the exciting ball-oriented Sarri-ball. Sarri’s philosophy focuses on ball possession and positional play. They dictate the tempo of the game, move the ball around, rotate and switch plays. And of course, don’t forget his attacking trio which completes the plays.

The summer has been of changes for Juventus. Sarri’s tactics won’t be absorbed easily and there will be a period of adjustment. But with stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Miralem Pjanic and defenders like Chiellini, Sandro, and De Ligt, they are a better team than Pharma, Sari-ball or not. This team has excellent depth over most opponents and that alone is hard to beat. I’m picking Juventus to beat Parma on 8/25/19. Prediction: Juventus
