Monday night will feature an interesting game between the inconsistent Miami Marlins and the struggling Oakland Athletics.

Oakland has the worst record in the American League at 45-77. They are 32.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West division and their playoff hopes were gone a long time ago. Miami has been better at 52-68 although they too are having a bad year. The Marlins are 26 games behind the Mets in the NL East and are 4th from the bottom in the National League team standings.

The Marlins are 2-8 in their last 10 games played and have lost four in a row. Meanwhile, the A’s are 4-6 in their last 10 games played but have won their last two games.

Baseball Miami Marlins

Miami got hammered by the Los Angeles Dodgers in their previous series. The feared Dodgers offense unleashed 17 combined runs in the final two games of their series. The Marlins will not worry about being outscored here as the A’s rank 29th overall in total runs scored this season.

The Marlins will be sending Pablo Lopez to the mound on Monday. The 26-year-old right-hander from Venezuela is 7-8 with an ERA of 3.83 and a WHIP of 1.17 in 24 starts this season.

Lopez has allowed 57 earned runs on 117 hits in 134.0 innings pitched this season. In his last start, Lopez conceded six runs on six hits in 4.2 innings pitched while picking up the loss against the Padres. The Marlins are 1-5 in Lopez’s last six starts.

Baseball Oakland Athletics

The A’s won the final two games of their three-game set against the Seattle Mariners to take a rare series win. Oakland has been struggling badly this season and is at the bottom of the American League. Overall, they have won four out of their last six-game played. They are however 19-39 when playing at Oakland Coliseum.

Adam Oller will open on top of the mound for the Athletics. The 27-year-old right-hander from Conroe, TX is 2-5 with an ERA of 6.63 and a WHIP of 1.69 in a total of 15 appearances including 10 starts. Oller has conceded 40 earned runs on 64 hits in a total of 54.1 innings pitched this season.

Oller is coming off a game where he allowed only one earned run on five hits in 6.0 innings pitched. He picked up the win as the A’s defeated the Texas Rangers 7-2 last August 17th. Oakland 3-12 in the 15 games he has appeared this season.

Pablo Lopez has had an up and down season for Miami. However, he will be facing an Oakland squad that is one of the league’s worst offensive teams. The A’s are dead-last in batting average at .215 and second-worst in on-base slugging percentage at .624.

Oller has pitched only five games at Oakland Coliseum and has a 1-3 record with an ERA of 8.59 during that stretch. He will be facing a Miami Marlins team that will be hungry for a victory after a four-game losing skid.

Oakland hasn’t been good enough on offense to blow out the Marlins like the Dodgers did the last time out. They will run into a good defensive unit in Miami. The Marlins have the better pitcher in this matchup and they will be facing an Oakland team that has struggled this season and has been horrible at home. I think there’s value n going with Miami here.

Prediction: Miami Marlins

The A’s are allowing 7.67 runs per game in their last three outings and things won’t get better with Adam Oller opening on top of the mound. Oller has pitched worse at home than he has on the road. Oakland is also a pitcher’s park so although the Marlins are having another disappointing offensive season, they should find plenty of trouble against the A’s with Oller on the mound,

These two teams have scored an average of 9.8 runs per game in their last 10 head-to-head meetings and 10.33 runs per game in their most recent three encounters. I like these teams to hit the over against this total.

Prediction: Over 7
