he New York Giants and New England Patriots collide in both teams’ preseason opener on Thursday night at Gillette Stadium.

The Giants were 4-11 SU and 6-11 ATS last season with the under going 11-5. New York went 0-3 SU in preseason play last year and will be boasting a new head coach for the fourth time in seven years. Meanwhile, the Patriots were 10-7 SU and ATS last season with the over going 9-8 in their 17 regular season games. New England went 3-0 in preseason play last year and they are 9-2 SU and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 preseason games played.

Football New York Giants

The Giants finished last in the NFC East division last season. New York lost five out of six division games last year and went 1-8 on the road. The Giants will bring back Daniel Jones as their starter and Saquon Barkley at running back. However, don’t expect the two to see plenty of action, if at all on Thursday night. The Giants signed several offensive linemen during the offseason to give Jones more protection. They also added wide receiver Marcus Kemp from the Kansas City Chiefs and linebacker Austin Calitro from the Cincinnati Bengals.

Davis Webb is expected to see the bulk of action behind center while veteran Tyrod Taylor could also give the team good minutes. New York has a solid receiving corps led by Kenny Golladay and Starling Shephard but injuries limited them last season. Running Back Saquon Barkley has had an injury-prone career and is likely going to be held back in the preseason. The Giants drafted Kayvon Thibodeaux with the 5th pick of the 2022 Draft as the main addition to their defense. Azeez Ojulari will team up with Thibodeaux on defense but the two won’t get plenty of action in preseason play either.

Football New England Patriots

The Patriots finished second in their division last season with a 10-7 record. They finished 3-3 SU in division play and were just a 4-5 SU team at home. New England’s biggest offseason transaction is probably the re-signing of safety Devin McCourty. The Pats also re-signed backup QB Brian Hoyer and wide receiver Matt Slater while trading linebacker Chase Winovich for linebacker Mack Wilson. The team also added cornerback Terrance Mitchell and running back Tim Montgomery to free agent deals. The Patriots will be returning with second year QB Mac Jones but he won’t be suiting up on Thursday.

Brain Hoyer re-signed with New England and he will be a good teacher for his backup Bailey Zappe who had a big season last year in college. The Patriots added DeVante Parker to their receiving corps and drafted Tyquan Thornton to bolster the depth further. The receiving unit also has Jakobi Meyers and Kendrick Bourne while their defense will be beefed up by young players in Mac Wilson Sr. and Cameron McGrone. Matthew Judon and JaWhaun Bentley are two of the best linebackers but will also be playing in limited minutes here. However, expect to see excellent minutes from the cornerback position which has a big competition in the preseason.

The Giants will have a new head coach for the fourth time in seven seasons. New York fired Joe Judge after going 4-13 SU and 6-11 ATS last season and he became the third straight coach to get fired before making it to his third year as head coach of the Giants.

Meanwhile, the Brian Daboll era kicks off on Thursday night and there is no doubt, that he will try to make an early statement win against the Patriots. The Giants have found success playing against the Patriots in preseason play, going 8-3 SU and 7-2-2 ATS in their last 11 preseason games against them.

Despite their struggles in the preseason against the Giants, Bill Belichick is a head coach who takes everything seriously, even in preseason games. Overall, Belichick has a 49-36 SU preseason record. He is 19-11 SU and 16-13-1 ATS in the Patriots’ last 30 preseason games. Belichick also has an impressive 12-7-3 ATS record in his last 22 opening preseason games coached.

New England went 10-7 SU and ATS during Mac Jones’ first season with the team. The Patriots added offensive guard Cole Strange and wide receiver Tyquan Thornton to help Jones in the offense by picking the two with their first two picks of the recent NFL draft.

Tyrod Taylor could see action here and that could give the Giants good minutes here. Meanwhile, the Patriots drafted Bailey Zappe in the 4th round of the last NFL Draft. Zappe threw for 5,967 passing yards with 62 touchdown passes for Western Kentucky last year and he looks like a guy who could light it up if given the minutes in this game.

New England should be able to take care of business at home with Belichick’s tested formula. The Giants will have to suffer growing pains again with another head coach. Prediction: New England Patriots

The Giants have Tyrod Taylor but New England can counter with veteran Brian Hoyer and a rookie in Bailey Zappe who wants to prove he can carry over his collegiate success to the pro ranks. The Giants’ defense has gotten better during the offseason but I don’t expect their main players to be in the game in the second half. This should favor the Patriots with Hoyer and Zappe looking to outdo the other. New England also has a big competition at cornerback so we could see some regular season defense here. Overall, I like the Patriots to win this game outright so I’ll take them anyway at +2.

This is preseason play where the starters don’t usually play more than enough minutes to make a difference if they play at all. This happens on both sides of the field, meaning we’re going to see both teams try to figure out which guys to keep after the preseason so there should be plenty of trial and error here.

It would be foolish to expect a lot from a Giants offense that will be playing under a new coaching staff. Sure Tyrod Taylor can put up numbers but that is not the object of the game for this team. Also, New York only scored a total of 40 points in three preseason games last year so that’s another thing to consider.

New York’s defense has also improved in the offseason while New England has a veteran defensive unit with good depth at most positions. They also have a cornerback competition and also limited their opponent to a total of only 33 points in preseason play last year. New England has gone under five times in their last seven preseason games.

Prediction: Under 34
