The Arizona Diamondbacks visit the San Diego Padres for a three-game series beginning on Monday.

Arizona has fallen off the cliff after a strong start and they currently find themselves in 4th place in the NL West Division with a record of 32-36. The Diamondbacks a far 9.5 games behind the division leaders L.A. Dodgers. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games played and head to San Diego after a 7-1 win over the Minnesota Twins to win their series 2-1.

San Diego is currently second in the NL West and is just one-half off the pace of the Dodgers with their 41-27 record. The Padres are also just 5-5 in their last 10 games played and head to this series with a three-game losing streak. San Diego got swept by the Colorado Rockies in their last series including a 3-8 loss on Sunday.

Baseball Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks are in 4th place in their division right now and they have been playing mediocre baseball as of late. Arizona is closer to falling to the bottom rather than moving up to third. On Sunday, they beat the Twins behind a 6th inning grand slam from Buddy Kennedy and starter Merrill Kennedy picked up his sixth win of the season.

Arizona is 9-11 in their last 20 games played and prior to Sunday, they were batting just .218 in their previous 20 games. Despite poor hitting, they are averaging 4.5 runs per game mainly because of 60 extra-base hits during that period.

Opening on top of the hill will be right-hander Zach Davies who is 2-3 with an ERA of 3.78 and a WHIP of 1.20 in a total of 13 starts this season. Davies has pitched in a total of 69 innings this season and has allowed 29 earned runs on 61 hits with 57 strikeouts and 22 walks.

In his last start, Davies did not factor in the decision as the Diamondbacks lost to the Cincinnati Reds 5-2 in 12 innings. Davies pitched six scoreless innings while allowing seven hits. Arizona is just 2-4 in his last six starts.

Baseball San Diego Padres

The Padres are still within one-half game of the Los Angeles Dodgers despite losing three in a row heading to this series. San Diego has found itself in contention to take their division thanks to excellent pitching and an offense that has come from different sources. On Sunday, starter Blake Snell became undone in the fifth inning as the Rockies to the game and completed a sweep of the Padres.

The Padres’ six-man rotation has produced 37 quality starts this season, the most in the majors. The ranks 5th in team ERA and the 10th best bullpen in all of baseball. Because of their pitching staff, San Diego is very much alive in the race to win the division.

Yu Darvish will start for the Padres on Monday. The 35-year-old from Osaka, Japan is 6-3 on the season with an ERA of 3.35 and a WHIP of 0.97 in 12 starts this season. The right-hander has pitched in a total of 75.1 innings and has allowed 28 earned runs on 58 hits with 61 strikeouts and 15 walks.

Darvish picked up the win in his last start as he allowed one earned run on five hits in eight innings pitched during a 4-1 win over the Chicago Cubs. The Padres are 8-1 in his last nine starts.

Arizona has struggled against right-handers this season, losing seven out of their last nine under that circumstance. The Diamondbacks rank only 23rd in the majors in total runs scored and are next to last in batting average among MLB teams.

Starting pitcher Zach Davis has struggled in three out of his last five starts, as he has allowed a total of 11 runs on 27 hits in 28 ⅔ innings and Arizona lost three out of their last five.

San Diego’s Yu Darvish is coming off back-to-back strong outings and he’s pitched well in three out of his last five starts. The right-hander has allowed only 8 runs on 23 hits in 26 ⅓ innings pitched over his last five starts. In two of those starts, he did not allow an earned run.

The Padres have lost their last two games but remember they won four in a row before that and are 8-4 in their last 12 games played. I’ll go with the Padres here.

Both pitchers are throwing well as of late. Davies has allowed only three runs total in his last three starts. Meanwhile, Darvish has conceded just eight runs in his last five starts. In his lone start against Arizona this season, Darvish did not concede a run in six innings of work. Davis allowed two runs on four hits in his first start against the Padres this season.

In their first four meetings this season, they underwent 3-1. These teams combined for 15 runs in their most recent meeting but did not hit 7 total runs in their previous three games before that one. San Diego’s line-up is already compromised with injuries. The loss of Machado will add to their scoring woes. Give me these teams to hit the under.
