“Soccer" Augsburg

FC Augsburg was founded in 1907 and is the largest football club in Swabian Bavaria. They have moved back ad forth the second and third division for a long time, experienced difficulties during the early 2000s before suffering relegation to the fourth division for two seasons. They have since recovered, were promoted and returned to the Bundesliga in 2010/111. They finished in 15th place during the previous season and enter this match-up as the soccer betting underdogs against Borussia Dortmund.

Here are the players for Augsburg as of August 9, 2019:

“Soccer" Who Wins?

Augsburg finished 15th in the Bundesliga the last time out. But remember that they held Bayern Munich to a 1-1 goal and produced a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund at their home field. Manuel Baum got fired after blowing hot and cold during the season and it was his replacement, Martin Schmidt, who barely got them off the relegation list.

With Alfred Finnbogason, Marco Richter, Florian Niederlechner and Michael Gregoritsch to call on, Augsburg won’t be left behind in the scoring. Finnbogason missed 16 games last season with injury and although he’s back, his health will be a cause of concern among their supporters.

Borussia Dortmund is 7-1-2 SU in their last 10 games played. They are also 4-0-1 SU in their last five games played at home. Augsburg is 3-2-5 SU in their last 10 games played and they are 1-2-2 SU in their last five games played away from home. Head to head, Borussia Dortmund is 5-3-2 SU in their last 10 matches against Augsburg. BVB is also 2-1-1 SU in their last four home games against Augsburg.

Dortmund kicked off their 2019/20 campaign on a very high note as they won the Supercup at the expense of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. Not only that, but they also pushed Bayern to their limits last season and breathed down their necks down the wire to close the 2018/19 Bundesliga season.

Since joining Borussia Dortmund in 2017 from Manchester City as a 17-year old, Jadon Sancho has improved leaps and bounds. Last season, his 14 assists were a Bundesliga best and if you add that to his 12 goals scored, that’s a total of 26 scores that he was involved in, one more than what teammate Marcus Reus’ total and he was German Football Player of the Year.

This could be Sancho’s year and it could possibly be the year where Dortmund ends Munich’s title run. With Sancho, Reus and Paco Alcacer leading the charge, Dortmund should beat Augsburg without any hitch. I’m picking Borussia Dortmund to beat Augsburg on 8/17/19. Prediction: Borussia Dortmund
