The Oakland A’s and Los Angeles Angels play Game 2 of their current set on Wednesday night at the Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

Oakland is 39-66 on the season and they are at the bottom of the AL West division standings and are 28 games behind their division leaders Houston Astros. The A’s are 6-4 in their last 10 games played and have lost their last three, including Tuesday’s Game 1 against the Angels.

The Angels are 44-59 on the season and they are one spot higher than the Athletics in the division standings. Los Angeles is 22 games behind the Astros and is just 5-5 in their last 10 games The Angels are also 10 games off the wild card pace in the AL and look to be out of playoff contention right now.

Baseball Oakland Athletics

The A’s head to Anaheim having lost another series to the Chicago White Sox. However, Oakland has been playing well since the All-Star break as they have a positive record. The A’s even swept the Houston Astros in a recent set. Although they still have the worst record in the American League, those signs look promising.

Oakland will send James Kaprielian to the mound on Wednesday. The 28-year-old right-hander from Tustin, CA has started 16 games this season and has posted a record of 2-5 with an ERA of 4.50 and a WHIP of .29 Kaprielian has struck out 53 hitters but has allowed 35 walks this season.

In his last start, Kaprielian allowed only one earned run in 6.0 innings while picking up his second win of the season the A’s beat the White Sox 7-3. Oakland is 5-1 in his last five starts.

Baseball Los Angeles Angels

The Angels are coming off a 1-3 series loss to the Texas Rangers. Los Angeles’ offense is going through a rough patch and their inability to give run support has cost this team wins in recent weeks. In Game 1 of this series, David Fletcher announced his return with a leadoff homer that set the tone for their 3-1 series opener victory.

Los Angeles will be sending their dual-threat superstar in Game 2 of this series. Shohei Ohtani is 9-6 on the season with an ERA of 2.81 and a WHIP of 1.02. The Japanese star ranks 7th overall with 145 strikeouts and only 23 walks. Ohtani has allowed only 11 home runs in 99.1 innings pitched this season.

Ohtani is coming off losses in his last two starts where he gave up 8 total runs. However, in the six games prior to his last two outings, Ohtani conceded only a total of six runs. The Angels are 5-2 in Ohtani’s last seven starts although they’ve lost in the last two.

Ohtani gave up only two runs in his last start and he’s going to have a fine outing against an Oakland team that ranks second to the last in the league when it comes to scoring runs this season. The A’s continue to struggle against right-handers batting just .211 while scoring 3.25 runs per nine innings.

The Angels have lost in Ohtani’s last two starts and there is no doubt that the MVP contender will want to put on a show on Wednesday. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ohtani keeps Oakland off the scoreboards here.

Prediction: Los Angeles Angels

Ohtani heads to this game having allowed 8 total runs in his last two starts. However, in the six starts prior to that, he only conceded six runs while fanning 10+ batters in each of those six starts. Looking at his season’s work, the real Ohtani is the one from those six games not the one in his latest two appearances. Given how good he is, I expect Ohtani to return to form against the A’s who aren’t among the scoring elites in the league this season.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles’ bats are currently in a rough stretch as they can’t hit big bombs as they did earlier this season. The Angels’ offensive struggles should make this a close contest. And a low-scoring one at that.

These two teams have combined to score an average of 5.60 runs per game in their last 10 head-to-head meetings and 5.67 runs per game in their most recent three encounters. Oakland has seen a total of 6 or fewer runs four times in their last five games played while Angels have scored 3 or fewer runs four times in their last five assignments.

I like these teams to go under the posted total of seven runs.

Prediction: Under 7
