The action continues to heat up as the Alliance of American Football (AAF) completed its 7th week.

On Saturday, 1-4 teams Salt Lake Stallions and Memphis Express looked to get out of the bottom at each other’s expense. The Stallions played their best game of the year as they raced to an early 19-0 leads before letting the stout defense preserve a 22-9 win over the Memphis Express. In the night cap, the battle between the top two offensive teams in the league ended with a 22-17 win for the Arizona Hotshots. The Hotshots ended a three game losing skid while also dealing the Orlando Apollos their first loss of the season.

Then on Sunday, the San Antonio Commanders massacred the Atlanta Legends 37-6, holding on to a big halftime lead to pound the Legends. Meanwhile, the Birmingham Iron hit a game-winning field goal that gave them a 32-29 win over the San Diego Fleet.

The odds aren’t out yet but we’re still going to give you our early betting picks anyway. So here is our preview of the next set of AAF games.

Football Orlando Apollos vs Atlanta Legends

The Apollos AAF-leading offense was limited to a season-low 17 points on Sunday by the Arizona Hotshots defense. The Hotshots pressured Garrett Gilbert and the Apollos averaged just five yards per play and were off all game long. But Orlando still had a chance to win it with one final possession. However, they were called for a false start while trying to spike the ball.

The Atlanta Legends fell 6-37 at home to the Commanders in Week 6. Quarterback Aaron Murray was held to 30-41 for 215 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions, with each takeaway converted to touchdowns by San Antonio. Peter Pujals subbed in for Murray in the 4th period and he went  4-6 with 17 passing yards.

Prediction: Orlando Apollos. After five straight victories, the law on averages was always destined to catch up with the Apollos. Despite the loss, the Apollos proved that their offense can’t be shut down. Remember they reclaimed the lead in the 4th quarter of the Hotshots game on Gilbert’s 10th touchdown of the season? Orlando played a really bad game but despite that, they were still in the game in the 4th quarter. That’s how good they are and I think they put that loss behind and bounce back big against a Legends team still hurting from a drubbing against the Commandeers.

Football Salt Lake Stallions vs San Antonio Commanders

The Stallions are coming off their most impressive outing of the season. The offense jumped off to a 19-point lead early on and their defense preserved the lead for a 22-9 win. Josh Woodrum threw for 243 yards with 2 touchdowns with one interception on 24-37 passing and Salt Lake’s defense registered a new AAF record with seven sacks.

The Commanders went on an impressive 3-1 in their just concluded four game road trip. On Sunday, the Commanders pounded the Atlanta Legends 37-6 . San Antonio forced Aaron Murray to throwing three interceptions and the Commanders’ defense also recovered one fumble then converted all four Atlanta turnovers to touchdowns. Meanwhile, quarterback Logan Woodside threw for 17-23 for 164 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Prediction: San Antonio lost just once during a four games road trip and their defense has been outstanding, forcing an AAF best 18 takeaways. The Commanders have forced nine turnovers in their last two games. The commanders have won three straight and I think San Antonio continues to roll as they head home for the first time in five games.

Football San Diego Fleet vs Arizona Hotshots

The Hotshots are coming off the biggest upset of the AAF season so far when they handed the Orlando Apollos their first defeat in six games, 22-17. What was impressive was how Arizona held the league’s top quarterback, running back and receiver trio to just 17 points. The Hotshots forced two turnovers and limited Garrett Gilbert to 23-48 passing. Quarterback John Wolford threw for 162 yards on 16-27 passing.

The San Diego Fleet got a big boost from receiver Dontez Ford who caught passes of 40,70 and 72 in Week 6. However, he got hurt after his third catch and didn’t return to the game. Take out those numbers and I’m not sure where the Fleet would have been last week. San Diego ran the football 23 yards and gained only 67 total yards on the ground.

Prediction: Arizona Hotshots. With a chance to take solo second in the West, both teams should have their A-game ready. The Hotshots carried a three-game losing streak heading to week 6 but with the win over the Apollos, Arizona should carry good momentum heading to this showdown with the Fleet in Arizona. I think their defense turned a corner last week and given how the Fleet struggled with their offense the last tie out, I think the home team takes this.

Football Birmingham Iron vs Memphis Express

The Iron beat the San Diego Fleet after a game winning field goal by Nick Novak. Novak drilled a 43-yard field goal as time expired to give the Iron a 32-29 win over the Fleet. It was a sweet victory for Novak who was born in San Diego and kicked for the Chargers from 2011-2014 while scoring a total of 802 points in 10 NFL seasons. Quarterback Luis Perez threw for 359 yards with three scores and running back Trent Richardson had two scores on a total of 46 yards.

The Memphis Express dropped to 1-5 on the season after losing to fellow cellar dweller Salt Lake Stallions in Week 6. The Express lost quarterback Zach Mettenberger to injury in that game. Mettenberger had led the Express to their first win after replacing Christian Hackenberg. Now the Express have signed former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel in the hopes of stabilizing their quarterback position and getting back in the picture.

Prediction: Birmingham Iron. No, I’m not riding the Johnny Manziel bandwagon but if Johnny Football gets to start in week 7 ( Express need change to spark the team!), then things could get interesting with Reece Horn establishing himself as a viable receiver with 8 catches for 129 yards in their last game. But the Iron have the better team overall and have been playing better. If Luis Perez continues to play well, I think Birmingham sends Memphis further down the bottom.
