The top two finishers in the English Football League championship earn a promotion to the Premier League. Teams which finish from third to sixth engage in a playoff where the winner is also promoted to the EPL. Meanwhile, the three lowest finishing teams are also relegated to the lower League One.

Leeds United finished third in the team standings with 83 points but lost to Derby County in the playoffs by an aggregate score of 3-4. Leeds is one of the biggest football clubs outside the English Premier League. But they have not been out of the top tier competition for the last 16 years and barely missed out a chance to end that drought last May when they came in only third in the last English Championship.

An automatic promotion had been there even before Easter as Leeds was on top of the standings most of the way. But they had a slump and limped to the finish line and concluded their English Championship campaign outside of the top two. They were in second place with four games left to play but they lost three and drew once to end up in third place. Leeds beat sixth-placed Derby County in the first leg of the semifinals playoff but lost the second leg by a score of 4-2.

But with the highly-touted coach Marcelo Bielsa activating a 12-month extension clause in his contract, Leeds is the top soccer betting favorites to win the 2020 English Championship and are expected to end their almost two-decade drought of making the top flight.

Fulham earned promotion via the EFL playoffs in 2018 but they only lasted one season in the English Premier League. Although Fulham struggled last season, they own one of the most talented line-ups in the league and will be Leeds’ top rival for the 2020 English Championship. Serbian Striker Aleksandr Mitrovic is a target of several EFL teams and could be gone next season. Fulham’s boss Scott Parker will be starting his first full season as coach after being the squad’s caretaker late last season.

West Bromwich was fourth last season but lost to eventual champions Aston Villa in the playoffs. They have appointed former West Ham boss Slaven Bilic as their new coach. On the other hand, Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock failed to keep his team’s EPL status last season. But Warnock is known to deliver promotions, having achieved the feat more than eight times in his career.

No question, Leeds has one of the strongest squads in the competition and with a genius like Bielsa calling the shots from the sidelines, Leeds is in a good position to win here. But remember that we also said that last year and Bielsa was here when everything fell apart late in the season.

Leeds lost winger Jack Clarke who signed with Tottenham but he is back at Leeds on a loan for one season. Bielsa has Portuguese star Helder Costa of the Wolverhampton Wanderers as his top target. Leeds’ pre-season transfer business may be limited because of the restrictions imposed on them under the EFL’s financial fair play rules. But given what they have right now, Leeds is a good find at +650.
