There are many sports gambling myths and sports betting superstitions doing the rounds. Quite a few sports bettors have a few beliefs and rituals which they believe will make them win, similar to football players who wear ‘lucky underwear’ to help them win a game. It’s fine to have a ritual of your own, as long as you realize it won’t really have an effect on the outcome of the game.

Let’s start by saying that most sports bettors believe that they are competing against the sports book with every bet that they make. This myth leave people to feel happy when they win a bet as they feel that they have won the fight against their sports gambling site, and it also makes them angry when they lose a bet, as they feel like they have been defeated by their bookie.

This is not true, however. When you place a sports bet you are actually competing against sports bettors who make the opposite choice, not the sports books. It is a sports betting myth that the book maker is anything but a medium between the two betting sides. The sports books make a profit by earning a vigorish, which is the difference in money that they make between the two types of bets. The art of book making comes in that the sports books have to be able to select the best sports betting options to optimize their player’s winnings and their own vigorish.

Betting superstitions

One of the greatest betting superstitions is that you will be able to win more money if you are able to ‘get inside of the book makers mind.’ Players who think like this will say that they notice how seventy five percent of players have bet on team 1 but that the book makers have not made a move to change the betting line. They then come to the conclusion that the book makers must be hiding something from the players.

You have to remember that there are MANY reasons which could lead to the sports book not changing the money line. It could be that the money they stand to make is not enough to validate moving the line.

Like I’ve said, it’s fine to have some betting superstitions, but I will not advise you to try and get inside of the mind of sports books. Rather try and analyze the match on your own terms. Remember that the people who set up the bets and lines are also only human and this means that they can make mistakes and can be unpredictable at the best of times.

Being able to tell the truths from the myths will give you the winning edge you need to excel in sports betting. Do your research and base your bets on truths, not on myths, and you are sure to do well.
