How to Bet on MMA
UFC and How to Bet on MMA
UFC betting is not very complicated at all as most online sports books will only accept the familiar money line bets that are common in many other sports. One of the primary considerations of betting on UFC is the fact that the odds do often change as betting proceeds. If a great deal of money is being bet on one fighter, the books will normally adjust the odds on the other side to gain more money on that fighter. Even if the odds change after you have placed your bet, your original odds will remain the same. For example:
You bet on Fighter A who has odds of +125 2 hours before the match.
Fighter B (-140) takes in $15,000 in bets over the next hour while Fighter B only takes in $4,000
One hour before the match, the UFC betting site adjusts the odds of Fighter A to +145 to encourage more bets on that fighter.
Even though the odds are much better, you will be stuck with +125 odds for the fight.
That being said, it is sometimes better to bet your money on a UFC fight late just in case the odds are adjusted. This happens more frequently when betting on the underdog for the fight as most safe betters prefer to bet on a likely win. Besides the fact that odds often change, betting on UFC fights is as simple as picking your choice to win, paying the money line, and hoping for the best. If you are unfamiliar with money lines here is an example:
Fighter A has odds of -110 meaning that he is the favorite to win. You will have to bet $1.10 to win every dollar. If you wish to win $100.00, you would need to bet $110.00. Your total winnings would be $210.00.
Fighter B has odds of +130 meaning that he is the underdog. You will win $1.30 for every $1.00 that you bet (should he win of course). If you bet $100.00, you would win $130.00 for a total of $230.00.
MMA Bets
MMA Betting works in almost exactly the same way as UFC betting. However there are some terms that are often used in MMA Bets with which you should be familiar to understand what the sports book is talking about.
Chalk: This is another term for the fighter that is likely to win the fight. (- odds)
Dog: Another term for the underdog. (+ odds)
Edge: Any information that allows for a better guess as to how the fight will progress or conclude.
EVN: Also known as even money. This occurs when the odds are at -/+ 100. You are not paying any money to bet on the chalk or gaining any more money by betting on the dog.
Handle: The total number of bets that can be taken on a fight.
Line: Another way of referring to the odds of an event.
Push: If a fight ends in a draw, it is often referred to as a push. Your bet is returned without any winnings.
Totals: You may often bet on the amount of rounds that a fight will last. This type of bet will be an over/under bet where the bookie picks a number (Ex. 5) and you bet on whether you think the fight will last less than or over 5 rounds.
