Football Betting Tips

How Football Betting Works

One of the most popular sports on which bets are placed is American Football. There are a wide variety of bets that can be placed on each game and a proper understanding of each of these types is essential to the understanding of how Football betting works. With some knowledge of the bets work and how to interpret betting odds, you will be able to place your first football bet in no time. This article will review the various football bets and how they function within the games.

Money Line Bets

Just like in many other team sports, money line bets are placed on a selected team before a football game. If you placed a wager on the team that ultimately wins the contest, you will win the bet. If you placed a wager on the team that ultimately loses the contest, you will lose the bet. This is one of the simplest bets to place on a football game.

Halftime Wager

In football, you can bet on the results of each half of the football game. In essence, each half is treated as a separate game. Usually, these bets can be money line bets or spreads. Sometimes you may place a bet combining both money line and spread bets.

Straight Bets

In football, straight bets are actually point spread bets. The specific spread is given at the time that you place your bet and the end result will determine your winnings. For example:

A better places a wager of $110 on San Francisco (-6) to beat Dallas (+6). If San Francisco wins the game by a score greater than 6 points, the better wins $100. Thus, the better would win a total of $210.00. If San Francisco were to only win by 6 points, the better would win no money except their initial bet ($110). If San Francisco were to lose the game or only win by less than 6 points (field goal, safety), the better would lose the bet.

Over/Under Bets

With this type of bet, the scores of both teams are combined into one number. Betters wager on whether or not the final number combination will be over or under a predetermined number. In football, all over/under bets carry a 1.1 to 1 pay out ratio. For example:

A better places a wager of $110 on the over of the San Francisco/Dallas game. The predetermined number is 45. At the end of the game San Francisco has scored 28 points and Dallas has scored 21 for a total of 49. The better has won the wager for a total of $210. If the score had added up to less than 45, the better would have lost the bet. If the number had been exactly 45, the original bet would be returned to the better.

Proposition Bets

During special sporting events (Super Bowl, Monday Night Football, etc.) many football betting sites accept proposition bets on individual events within the game. Players usually make these bets in addition to a standard bet on the game’s outcome. Some examples of popular football proposition bets are:

Which team will score the first touchdown?
Which team will score the last touchdown?
Will the first point of the game be awarded as a field goal?
Over/Under fumble bet.
Over/Under team score bet.
